What Kind Of Jeep Do I Have? TJ, JK, JKU, JL, JLU, JT?

History of Jeep Wrangler

At EZ4X4, we cater to the Jeeps 1997 and up. Almost every day, we run into folks who know they own a Jeep but aren’t exactly sure which chassis code they have. This guide explains the various Jeep chassis codes so you know exactly what we’re referring to when it comes to fitment.

Jeep Wrangler TJ (1997–2006)

Introduced in 1996 as a 1997 model, the second-generation Wrangler brought back the classic round headlamps. The primary engine was the AMC 242 4.0L inline-six. From the TJ onward, Wranglers switched to coil-spring suspension instead of leaf springs, and the automatic shifter was relocated to the floor. In 2004, a long-wheelbase “Unlimited” model was introduced.

Jeep Wrangler JK & JKU (2007–2018)

The third-generation Wrangler, the JK, debuted in 2006 at the New York Auto Show. It retained classic Wrangler traits such as solid axles, body-on-frame construction, fold-flat windshield, and removable doors. For the first time, Jeep introduced a four-door model called the JKU. The JK’s wheelbase was stretched by 20 inches, compared to 10 inches on previous models. If you have a 2-door, it’s a JK. If you have 4 doors, it’s a JKU.

Jeep Wrangler JL & JLU (2018–Present)

The JL introduced in 2017 as a 2018 model and is available in two-door (JL) and four-door (JLU) configurations. Its design closely resembles the TJ, with round headlamps and a seven-slot grille. Trim levels include Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon. The Sahara trim is available only as a four-door model.

Jeep Gladiator JT

Jeep entered the pickup market with the JT Gladiator—essentially a Wrangler blended with a short-bed truck. We run several JTs in the EZ4X4 fleet and have a game-changing solution for Gladiators and pickups alike: our Bed Box system.
